There's nothing worse than January in Minnesota. We know this, and that's why we like to encourage music makers to use our demo contest as an excuse to stay inside. Some of you submitted your demo on day 1! Impressive. The majority, however, flooded in last minute with carefully crafted masterpieces... And some whipped something together so hastily and wrecklessly that they made us ask, "Is it a work of genius and we are too simple minded to see it for what it truly is?" (see visual art translation) -->
Because we received so many entries this year, we thought it'd only be fair to host a good number of judges in our studio to analyze them all. We hosted nearly 40 judges ranging from A&R to journalists, publishers to producers. Then we used advanced technology (Excel) to scientifically calculate the results down to the very smallest particle of pen ink.
Here are the winners of this year's contest:
$1000 TOWARDS STUDIO TIME FOR COMPLETION OF AN ALBUM: VOCALIST
$1000 TOWARDS STUDIO TIME FOR COMPLETION OF AN ALBUM: BAND/ARTIST
Maple & Beech
As we do each year, here is a list of those definitely worth mentioning!
If you don't see your name on this list, keep writing songs! Practice makes perfect muffins (golden brown, moist, not too crumbly). We can offer a bit of advice for next year's contest.
1. Don't bore us, get to the chorus
2. Keep intro's 1-30 seconds long
3. Don't bury the vocal. Judges want to be able to hear your ideas!
4. If using a phone as a recording device, hold it at "selfie" distance from your mouth
