Some vocals are sweet, like a kitten purring in your ear. And then you've got Elle King. Recently featured on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, King has a commanding, throwback stage presence that is matched only by her sinister, gritty voice. You may have heard of her dad, Rob Schneider, but King was raised on Otis Redding, AC/DC, Etta James, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Her new album Love Stuff is a bluegrass-rock medley.

Not every singer needs great lyrics and King falls into this niche with pretty inconsistent lyrical quality, but gravelly tracks like Ex's & Oh's, Kocaine Karolina, America's Sweetheart, and I Told You I Was Mean almost make up for it.

For fans of Amy Winehouse, ZZ Ward, and The Griswolds.
